Year 3
As we welcome children to year 3 after the transition from our infant school, our emphasis is on ensuring that they are happy, safe and comfortable in their new surroundings, enabling them to quickly adjust to life at the junior school.
Many systems and routines are familiar to them, from the continuity of our reward and behaviour systems right down to the schemes used to promote early reading and maths.
Year 4
As the children move into their second year of the juniors, they can expect to build upon the foundations set for them in Year 3 with increased rigour and expectations in lessons. We love to have fun in Y4 and continue to learn through movement, song and outside activities as often as we can. We believe that learning works best when it is partnered with enjoyment.
During year 4 we broaden our horizons by engaging with the “linking schools” project where we learn about life in different communities in Sheffield through writing activities. Year 4 is also the year where we take our swimming lessons, ensuring that all children have the chance to become competent swimmers before the age of 10.
Year 5
Year 5 sees our pupils enter the upper key-stage 2 phase of their time at Lound. As such, much emphasis is put on children beginning to make links in their learning across the curriculum as units in science, history and geography pick up concepts studied earlier on in school and build upon them in greater depth.
We understand that children are of an age where they are becoming increasingly independent and we strive to encourage and embed this in our year 5 learners. It is during year 5 that some children will train to become peer mediators and all children are offered the chance to improve their road safety awareness through the ‘bike-ability’ scheme.
Year 6
During the final year of a pupil’s journey through Lound, we focus their learning not only around the curriculum, but also around embedding the skills to make a successful transition on to secondary school.
We build upon pupils’ developing independence, organisational skills, self-esteem, confidence, resilience and empathy both through our increased expectations and careful planning of the curriculum, whilst also helping our children to reach their full potential in their end of key stage assessments (SATs).
